What’s Your Major Worth?

Looking ahead to graduation and wondering what that first pay check is going to look like? Or maybe you’re about to declare your major and need a little help deciding.  You may want to take a peek at the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) recently published 2013 January Salary Survey.  The report looks at employer-based data from over 400,000 companies and the actual starting salaries for the Class of 2012.

The executive summary  spills the beans on which industry was the busiest in new hires (education), which was the highest paying industry regardless of your major (mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction), and which was the highest paid major for the Class of 2012.

So who’s psyched?  Engineering and Computer Science majors that’s who.  Who’s extra psyched? Mechanical engineers who chose careers in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction. Their starting salaries were the highest overall averaging $77,500.

Check it out.  To read the executive summary from NACE for free, click here.

College Seniors, Your Days Are Numbered: The Last Lazy Days of Summer

Here’s something to think about… for all you incoming college seniors, these next 2 weeks could possibly be your last carefree days of summer for the foreseeable future.  Yep, post-graduation you will undoubtedly join the ranks of the working world and start collecting those paychecks from that dream job Readyforce hooked you up with.  For some of you that will even mean immediately following graduation, which of course is a good thing, but it will also mean ‘summer’ is no longer synonymous with ‘vacation’.  Your future employer? Yeah, they operate 12 months out of the year.

So unless you stumble into one of those rumored workplaces that brags about having ‘Summer Fridays’, your ability to lose track of what day of the week it is about to come to a screeching halt.  We’re not trying to bring anybody down here, quite the opposite, we just want to be sure that you spend these last days of summer with a renewed sense of appreciation for the potential they hold.  Carpe diem if you will.

So you’ve got 2 weeks (14 days or 20,160 minutes left, however you want to look at it).

The question is… how will you spend them? What is on your Senior summer bucket list?

Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Go to a movie, in the middle of the day.
  • Grab a sandwich, go to a park or the beach, kick your shoes off and take a nap, on a Tuesday.
  • Go see another movie.
  • Invite 5 friends over and have a BBQ
  • Find the most ridiculous tourist trap in the neighborhood where you live and do whatever it is.
  • Take a road trip, because you can.
  • Do nothing. All day. But appreciate it.

Whatever is on your list, be sure that you have fun and of course be safe. We aren’t advocating for any crazy thrill seeking activities here.

THIS… does look fun though.

Water-Propelled Flying Transportation… With a Catch – Core77Posted by hipstomp | 20 Jul 2012 | Comments (0) Remember Franky Zapata's Flyboard, which turned him into a sort of aquatic Iron Man? Now there's a company making what they call the Jetovator, which similarly uses water propulsion, but this time wrapped in a more motorcycle-like form factor that they claim is very easy to ride.

And PLEASE, whatever you put on your list…  do not allow photos of yourself to contaminate your job seeking profile on the internet. Be smart, you are getting googled these days.

So tell us, what will you do to make your last days of summer count?

Top 5 Reasons Readyforce Happily Moved to San Francisco

Number 1: Well, There’s This…

And we could stop there but there is more to share.

Here are the other top 4 reasons Readyforce is glad we moved offices from Menlo Park to San Francisco.

Number 2: Apparently, SoMa District Is Where It’s At

We knew we were on to something, because it just felt right for us to move now. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones. This past week we got some new neighbors when Pinterest announced, albeit a little more flashy than we did, via the Mayor, that they too were moving to SoMa. Welcome folks.

Here’s where we are… on a map.

Number 3: San Francisco Growing Epicenter of Talent

EWHerry Recruiter Honeypot

From Elaine Wherry’s recent post, the Recruiter Honeypot, which outlines her 2-year experiment on trying to attract talent and what she learned about Silicon Valley’s talent war, she rightly outlines how there’s been a surge of hiring engineering talent in San Francisco. To quote her post, The entrepreneurial epicenter is no longer Palo Alto. If you’re south of San Mateo, figure out your SF strategy now.”

We’re happy to be here.

Number 4: Shorter Commute = Happy Readyforce

We’ve heard it before, less commute can make for happier team members. According to a 2011 British study, there is a strong correlation between life satisfaction and commuting time (see chart below).

After moving to San Francisco, the Readyforce team, on average, has a shorter commute by 15 minutes. We think that’s a great savings and boost to morale.

Number 5: Open Shared Office Space = Pretty Pinterestable Daily Views

Readyforce San Francisco at StartUpHQ

Seen this space before? These are our new digs. It’s a common space and it’s great. You may have seen it over on Pinterest, often pinned on boards titled “Cool Office Spaces.”  We agree.  Oh and follow us on Pinterest too.

Also, one of the cast members for the new Bravo show “Silicon Valley” is filming here, so you might see some of us in the background.  No promises though.

The Downsides?

The water filter at the common sink takes foreverrrrr to fill up our water bottles and that makes Cat sad.

We like it better when Cat is happy.

Plus there are quite a few dishes in the sink by the end of the day, which makes Devin itch.

By the way, that label says “Please put dirty dishes in dishwasher, do not leave in sink”.  Um OK…

Other than that, we’re psyched to be here!

Our new address is 185 Clara Street, San Francisco, CA.
