Evan Noon, University of Michigan ’14, Facebook intern summer 2013

We recently spoke to Evan about his search on Readyforce and asked him how the platform helped him in his job search and what advice he might have for some of his classmates that are still looking.

Evan credits the easy setup that allowed him to get up and running connecting with companies right away.  He also appreciated the ability for him to add video to his profile to help tell his story.

When we asked him what advice he’d share with fellow students either about to embark on or in the middle of their career search he had the following pointers:
  • Show a project that you worked on and in which you were able to do a ‘deep dive.’ In Evan’s case, he highlighted the rugby website he built for his club at the University of Michigan.
  • Be creative in your profile, have the person reading have fun getting to learn about you.
  • Be well-rounded.  Evan shared that he felt that companies were really looking for this quality in candidates since they are trying to solve world-wide real problems and it helps to have people who can come to the table with different perspectives and pull from varying backgrounds.
Great tips Evan!  We’re looking forward to welcoming Evan when he arrives in the Bay Area to start his internship with Facebook.  Congrats Evan and Facebook on making the connection on Readyforce! We’re happy we could help!

Hacker Tour Last Stop Coding Challenge Round Up & Giveaway Winners Announced

After visiting 25 campuses and meeting over 5,000 students this past fall, Readyforce wrapped up the 2012 Hacker Tour with the ‘Last Stop’ inter-collegiate coding challenge.  Partnering with HackerRank, we invited students from all over the world to write their best code in order to make their ‘bots’ compete in a virtual maze.  Think Tron meets Pac-Man.

The Schools

Over 500 students from more than 83 different schools registered for the coding competition.  MIT had the most students registered with 33 coders, followed by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne with 31, Auburn University with 18, University of Michigan had 17 and Princeton with 16 coders.

The Prizes

At stake in addition to top honors and bragging rights was cold hard cash: $1,500 for 1st place, $500 to 2nd and $200 to 3rd place.  But those that didn’t finish in the top three spots didn’t walk away empty handed.

In what some argued might be the best conciliatory prize ever, students in fourth through sixth places battled for Romo, the smartphone robot from Romotive.   Still those top 25 scorers received received 12-months free from Firebase and those in the top 50 received $20 credit from uber.  A nice haul for the top 50 students that participated!

The Final Scoreboard

Top honors went to Kevin Davis of Auburn University who along with his fellow War Eagle, David Shuckerow rocked the campus into the wee hours of the night in order to claim major bragging rights for Auburn. There’s a great back story here that David shared with us and Mashable wrote a great article on it.

The Final Standings

Place Name School
1 Kevin Davis Auburn University
2 Kevin Whelan University of Virginia
3 David Briemann Hochschule Darmstadt (University of Applied Sciences) – Germany
4 David Shuckerow Auburn University
5 Joao Goethe University Frankfurt – Germany
6 Jared Beaudrot Clemson University

Student Spotlight: Marianne Jullian, Princeton 2013 to Join AdRoll

Mars

Marianne Jullian, Princeton class of 2013 to join AdRoll

Marianne Jullian, or Mars as her classmates at Princeton know her, is a familiar face on Readyforce – well, she should be, she’s on our homepage! Mars first created her Readyforce profile in what she thought was just an experiment to gain exposure to exciting startups.  As an early beta student, she was pleasantly rewarded. After following eight companies and connecting with another dozen, Mars received four offers from companies on Readyforce.  This past week, Mars informed us that she has officially accepted an engineering position with AdRoll and will move to the Bay Area following graduation in May 2013.  Congratulations Mars and AdRoll!

Choosing between the four offers was no easy task, Mars told us.  But ultimately, AdRoll’s energetic culture connected with her and she felt that it would be a great company where she could apply her design mentality to problem solving.  Mars is looking forward to working on client side projects where she can regularly contribute and have the opportunity to continue to learn.

When we asked Mars what her favorite feature about Readyforce was, she emphatically replied: “the browsing! I loved being able to discover interesting and small companies that otherwise would not have been on my radar screen. That feature was totally unique to Readyforce and something that I couldn’t find on campus.”

We are happy that we could help Mars and AdRoll connect!
Congratulations!
